Continuing Education Courses for Counselors in California

Counselors in California are required to complete mandatory continuing education (CE) courses in order to maintain their license. These courses must be taught by providers who meet the requirements of Title 16, §1887, 4 and 3 of the California Code of. The American Psychological Association (APA) has approved the PPS to provide CE credits to psychologists. PPS is responsible for this program and its content.

In each license renewal cycle, California psychologists can earn up to 27 credits through independent learning (formerly known as distance learning). Our on-demand classes are considered independent learning. Additionally, 9 credit hours must be earned through live classes, which can include our live webinars. CE hours can also be taken at institutions of higher education that meet the requirements set out in Business and Professions Code §4980,54 (for LMFT and AMFT), §4989,34 (for LEP), §4996.22 (for LCSW and ASW) or §4999.76 (for LPCC and APCC) or have the approval of the California Office of Private Postsecondary Education.

However, counselors may not participate in more than twelve (1) hours of self-learning educational activities approved by the Board in a thirty-six (3) month period. This course will take an in-depth look at two different assessment tools, the Holmes-Rahe Inventory of Vital Stressors and the Brief-COPE, which have been used in both clinical practice and research to help understand people's experiences dealing with common life stressors.
